How to Buy TMT Steel Bars in India: Complete 2026 Buyer's Guide
Everything a homebuilder or contractor needs to know before buying TMT steel bars in India — grades, weights, dealer verification, and price negotiation tips.
What is TMT Steel and Why Does Grade Matter?
Thermo-Mechanically Treated (TMT) steel bars are the backbone of every concrete structure built in India. Unlike older cold-twisted deformed (CTD) bars, TMT bars are manufactured by rapid quenching after hot rolling, which gives the outer surface a hard martensitic shell while keeping the inner core soft and ductile.
The grade indicates minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa). The most common grades used in India are:
- Fe415 — Minimum 415 MPa yield strength. Suitable for single-storey residential construction and non-structural elements.
- Fe500 / Fe500D — Most widely used grade. The "D" suffix means higher ductility (elongation ≥ 16%). Mandatory for seismic zones III, IV and V.
- Fe550 / Fe550D — High-strength grade used in bridges, industrial structures, and high-rise buildings. Allows ~6–10% less material for equivalent strength.
Step 1 — Calculate Your Requirement Before Approaching a Dealer
Never walk into a dealer without an estimate. For a standard 2BHK ground-floor house (1,000–1,200 sq.ft built-up area), the typical thumb rule is 3.5–4.5 kg of TMT per square foot. That puts your requirement at roughly 3.5–5.5 metric tonnes (MT).
Break it down further:
- Foundation: 16mm and 20mm bars are preferred for footings.
- Columns: 12mm to 20mm vertical bars with 8mm stirrups at 150mm spacing.
- Beams: 12mm to 16mm main bars with 8mm stirrups.
- Slab: 8mm or 10mm bars at 100–150mm spacing (both ways).
Always add a 10% wastage factor for cutting and lapping.
Step 2 — Verify the Dealer Before You Buy
A verified dealer on CoreJoint has:
- A registered GST number (you should get a GST invoice)
- Authorised stockist status from at least one major brand
- Updated price rates within the last 72 hours
Always ask for the mill test certificate (MTC) for the specific heat number on the bars you are buying. Reputable brands supply this automatically.
Step 3 — Understand TMT Pricing: Base + Extras
The quoted price per MT is rarely the final price. Watch out for:
- Cutting charges: ₹50–200 per MT if bars are cut to non-standard lengths
- Transportation / loading: ₹300–800 per MT depending on distance
- GST: 18% on the base price
- Weight variation: Actual weight is calculated by weighbridge. Ensure you see the slip.
Step 4 — Negotiate Smartly
TMT prices move daily based on billet costs from NMDC/JSW. Use CoreJoint's live price tracker to know the benchmark before negotiating. A ₹500–1,000/MT discount on a 5MT purchase saves ₹2,500–5,000. Most dealers will match the market rate if you show them the live data.
Quick Checklist Before Purchase
- Get 3 quotes from verified dealers in your city
- Confirm brand, grade, and IS standard (IS 1786:2008)
- Verify mill test certificate matches the heat number on bars
- Get GST invoice — avoid cash-only deals
- Check weight at delivery point (weighbridge slip)
- Inspect bars for uniform ribs, no cracks, and correct colour
