TMT Steel Pricing Guide: Every Cost Component Explained
Understand every line item in your TMT steel invoice — base price, GST, freight, cutting charges, and weighbridge variations — so you never overpay.
Why Your Final TMT Price Is Never the Quoted Price
A dealer quotes ₹59,000 per MT. Your final invoice is ₹72,400 per MT. What happened? This guide breaks down every cost component so you can compare quotes accurately and negotiate from a position of knowledge.
Component 1: Base Price (Ex-Warehouse)
The base price is the cost of the steel bar before any taxes or logistics. It is set by the dealer based on their procurement cost from the mill, plus their margin. Base prices in India are typically quoted ex-warehouse — from the dealer's stockyard.
Base prices vary by:
- Brand: TATA Tiscon commands ₹1,500–2,500/MT premium over mid-tier brands.
- Grade: Fe550D is ₹500–1,500/MT above Fe500D.
- Diameter: Smaller diameters (8mm, 10mm) often carry a ₹500–1,000/MT premium over standard 12mm due to higher processing cost per tonne.
- Location: Cities farther from steel mills pay higher ex-warehouse prices due to freight embedded in dealer procurement cost.
Component 2: GST — 18% on Everything
TMT steel bars (HSN code 7214) attract 18% GST uniformly across India. This applies to the base price and most other charges. On a ₹59,000/MT base price, GST adds ₹10,620 — bringing it to ₹69,620/MT.
Key point: If you are a GST-registered contractor or builder, you can claim input tax credit (ITC) on the 18% GST paid, effectively reducing your steel cost by 15.25% (18/118). Always insist on a GST invoice — cash purchases are non-compliant and deny you this benefit.
Component 3: Transportation / Freight
Unless the dealer delivers free to your site, you pay transportation. Typical rates:
- Within city (5–15 km): ₹300–600/MT
- District town to site (15–50 km): ₹500–1,200/MT
- Interstate (50–300 km): ₹800–2,500/MT
Always compare dealer quotes on a delivered-to-site basis, not ex-warehouse. A dealer 50 km away quoting ₹1,000/MT less ex-warehouse may be more expensive once freight is added.
Component 4: Loading and Unloading
Some dealers charge separately for loading at their yard and/or unloading at your site. Typical charges: ₹100–300/MT each. These are negotiable, especially on large orders.
Component 5: Cutting Charges
Standard TMT bars are supplied in 12-metre lengths. If you need non-standard lengths (e.g., 6-metre bars for a small site), dealers charge cutting fees of ₹50–200/MT. Avoid cutting charges by ordering standard lengths and cutting on-site — your mason can do this.
Component 6: Weight Variation
Steel is sold by weight, not by number of bars. Your payment is based on the weighbridge slip from the dealer's or a third-party weighbridge. IS 1786 allows a ±7% weight tolerance on individual bars. On a 5MT order, a +7% variation means you are paying for 5.35MT. Always watch the weighbridge slip and cross-check with a spot weight calculation (D²/162 × number of bars × length).
Sample Invoice Calculation
| Item | Rate | Amount (5MT) |
|---|---|---|
| Base price (Fe500D, 12mm, TATA Tiscon) | ₹59,000/MT | ₹2,95,000 |
| GST @18% | 18% | ₹53,100 |
| Transportation (15 km) | ₹500/MT | ₹2,500 |
| Loading/Unloading | ₹200/MT | ₹1,000 |
| Total (approx.) | ₹3,51,600 | |
| Effective /MT | ₹70,320 |
Best Practices for Getting the Best Price
- Get 3 delivered-to-site quotes from CoreJoint-verified dealers.
- Use CoreJoint's live price tracker as your negotiation benchmark.
- Buy when TMT prices are seasonally soft (monsoon months: July–September).
- On orders above 10MT, ask for a bulk discount — most dealers can offer ₹300–700/MT off.
- Pay by NEFT/RTGS and get a GST invoice — cash dealers cannot offer you ITC benefits.
