Why TMT Prices Differ Between Indian Cities: A Data-Driven Analysis

A detailed breakdown of why TMT steel prices vary significantly between cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Tier 2 towns — freight, taxes, demand, and supply chain factors.

The Price Gap Is Real and Significant

In June 2026, Fe500D TMT bars from the same brand (JSW Neosteel 12mm) are priced at approximately:

  • Mumbai (near JSW Dolvi plant): ₹59,500/MT
  • Bengaluru (near JSW Vijayanagar plant): ₹58,800/MT
  • Delhi: ₹60,200/MT
  • Chennai: ₹59,800/MT
  • Patna: ₹61,500/MT
  • Shillong (Northeast): ₹64,000/MT

That is a ₹5,200/MT difference between Bengaluru and Shillong — on a 10MT purchase, ₹52,000. Understanding why helps you assess whether your local price is fair.

Factor 1: Distance from the Steel Mill

This is the dominant factor. Rail freight for steel in India costs approximately ₹1.5–2.5/MT per km. Road freight is higher. The farther a city is from the nearest rolling mill, the higher the embedded freight cost in the dealer's procurement price.

Cities like Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), and Vijayanagar (Karnataka) are near major steel plants and benefit from near-zero freight on procurement. Cities like Guwahati, Leh, and Port Blair bear full freight burden.

Factor 2: Multi-Plant Brand Advantage

Brands with multiple plants (JSW, TATA) can typically supply each region from the nearest plant, keeping freight costs lower than single-plant brands. This is why JSW's price advantage in South India is larger than in North India — their Vijayanagar (Karnataka) plant is the supply source for the South.

Factor 3: State VAT and Entry Tax (Pre-GST Legacy)

Since GST replaced state-level taxes in 2017, the direct tax differential between states has largely been eliminated. However, some states still have infrastructure-related cess or levies that marginally affect delivered costs. Additionally, some states' road/transport infrastructure adds to effective freight costs even for same-distance journeys.

Factor 4: Local Demand-Supply Balance

In cities with active construction booms (Hyderabad, Pune, Surat in 2024–2026), dealer inventory turns faster, allowing dealers to hold tighter margins but also command market-rate pricing. In slower markets, dealers may discount to move stock or mark up to cover higher holding costs.

Factor 5: Dealer Concentration

Markets with many competing dealers (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru) tend to have more competitive pricing — the margin is competed down. Markets with few dealers or a dominant local dealer have less price competition. This is particularly visible in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

Factor 6: Grade Mix in the Local Market

Some regions predominantly sell Fe500D while others have significant Fe415 or Fe550D demand. The local price you see reflects the mix that dealers stock. Comparing prices across cities for the exact same grade and diameter eliminates this variable.

How to Use This Knowledge

  • If your city's price is more than 8–10% above the nearest steel mill city, investigate whether alternative suppliers deliver from that city.
  • For large projects (50MT+), it may be worth direct procurement from a regional distributor closer to the mill.
  • Use CoreJoint's city-wise price comparison to benchmark your local quote against the national range.
