Estimated steel requirement
3.20 T – 3.80 T
Based on 3.5 kg/sq ft · 1,000 sq ft
This is a rule-of-thumb estimate (±10–15%). Actual quantity depends on structural design, column layout, and span. Always get a structural engineer's BOQ for procurement.
The 3.5 kg/sq ft rule — how it works
The standard thumb rule for RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) residential construction in India is 3.5 kg of TMT steel per square foot of built-up area. This covers all structural members — footings, columns, beams, and slabs — across a typical G+1 or G+2 house.
| Building type | Steel (kg/sq ft) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| House / Villa (G+1 or G+2) | 3.2–3.8 | Lighter loads, simpler spans |
| Apartment (G+4 to G+7) | 3.8–4.5 | Heavier columns, longer spans |
| High-rise (G+8+) | 4.5–5.5 | Lateral loads, transfer slabs |
| Commercial / industrial | 4.5–6.0 | Heavy live loads, wide spans |
These are rule-of-thumb ranges based on typical Indian RCC construction. Your actual requirement will be defined by the structural engineer's design (BOQ). Always use this tool for initial budgeting only — never for final procurement without a structural BOQ.

Don't forget wastage
Steel bars are cut, bent, and lapped on site — none of that material is recoverable. Standard wastage factors to add on top of your structural requirement:
Cutting & bending
2–3%
Off-cuts from bar bending
Lapping
2–3%
40D lap length at joints
Safety buffer
1–2%
Re-ordering risk, site loss
Total recommended wastage: 5–7% over the structural quantity.
Frequently asked questions
How much TMT steel is needed for 1,000 sq ft house construction?
A 1,000 sq ft house (G+0 or G+1) typically requires 3.2–3.8 tonnes of TMT steel, based on the standard thumb rule of 3.5 kg per sq ft of built-up area. This covers columns, beams, slabs, and footings. Add 5% wastage to your procurement order.
What is the standard steel consumption per sq ft in India?
The rule of thumb for residential RCC construction in India is 3.5–4 kg of TMT steel per sq ft of built-up area. Low-rise houses use the lower end (3.2–3.5 kg/sq ft); taller buildings use 4–5 kg/sq ft due to heavier column and beam requirements.
How much steel does a 2 BHK apartment need?
A typical 2 BHK apartment of 900–1,100 sq ft requires approximately 3.15–4.4 tonnes of TMT steel (Fe500 or Fe500D grade). The exact quantity depends on the structural design, number of floors, and seismic zone.
Should I buy more steel than the estimate?
Yes — always add 5–7% to the calculated quantity for wastage (cutting, bending, lapping). For a first-order in a city you haven't procured from before, add an extra 2–3% buffer. It's easier to have a small surplus than to order a small lot urgently.
Is this estimate accurate for my project?
This is a preliminary estimate based on industry thumb rules. It is useful for initial budgeting and quote comparison. For actual procurement, always use the Bill of Quantities (BOQ) from your structural engineer, which accounts for the specific design of your building.
